KATALOG WEB

Thanks for reading this article. This is Yusuke.

It starts warmer from the middle of March in Japan.
I have terrible hay fever caused by Japanese ceder pollen, which tell me coming of spring lol.
However, I feel it by the blossom of plum flowers in Kamiyama as well.
Today, I would like to introduce to you about Agawa Plum Festival and what learned from locals.

Agawa Plum Festival is the biggest event in Agawa area.

The number of plum trees in Agawa area is about 16,000.

The number of plum trees in Agawa area is about 16,000,
which is the largest plum park in Shikoku region.

Many people visit to Kamiyama town in the term of Agawa Plum Festival every year.
It is the most exciting event in Agawa started from 1992.

Some traditional ceremonies were taken on the opening day for celebration.
Locals performed Lion dance and Umbrella dance. It has been five years since the umbrella dance shown last time.

I was still trainee when I supported this festival last year.
I just helped to make a tower for scattering rice cakes at the moment.

However, I could join to prepare this event for every part this year such as making rice cakes,
planting plum trees, recording the opening ceremony and more.

Usually we could enjoy the graduation of plum blossom,
but almost of all plum trees were already full on the 26th of February when the opening ceremony was taken.

From this plum festival, many kinds of flower festivals would start in Kamiyama town.
For instance, the rape blossoms in Eta area, the cherry blossoms in Orono area and the azalea flowers in Kamibun area.

That definitely is a strong point of Kamiyama town where is surrounded by beautiful nature.
(I recommend to check a home page of Kamiyama town. )

Two pairs of the Lion dance were well synchronizing.

The umbrella dancers wore gorgeous uniforms.

Learning from locals through traditional customs

I joined to plant thirteen nurseries of plum on the 16th of last February with a committee of Agawa Plum Festival.

We planted them on the road side near the Ninomiya shrine where was the main site of opening ceremony.
Actually, there is next to a post office so that many people would enjoy watching their growth.

170308_05
Three kinds of plum, white, reddish pink and weeping plum. Used a crane for a nursery tree was too heavy.
170308_06
A nursery tree needs more than five years before planting.

I was in high spirits because the blossom timing was earlier than last year.
But, locals looked not so happy.
A local taught me that reason when I joined to set up of the main site on the previous day of the opening ceremony.

“It is difficult to produce fruits in case of early blossoms”
I asked him that reason.
“Bees cannot fly and work yet because it is still cold.”

Make sense?
The plum trees cannot produce fruits unless bees carry their pollen.

I definitely learned it when I was elementary school, but I could not remember about that.
It seems that learning would be more effective not only study in a classroom but also experience outside.

In addition, I and my colleagues helped to make rice cakes for scattering at the opening ceremony.
Neighbors gather to an assembly hall and prepare them every year.
The number of rice cake was too many to count lol.

170308_07
Rice cakes need plenty of dry, so we reversed them in every ten minutes.

A local taught me about the past value of plum fruits during making rice cakes.

“Plum fruits were really valuable before. We could own a house in just one year by plum’s sales.
This is the reason why plum fruits used to be called ‘Blue Diamonds’.”

I was extremely surprised to hear that!
It was true, but plum fruits are not so expensive in these days.

It is one of the good points to learn local customs and knowledge by participation to local community.

Cultivating Original Culture

In conclusion, I believe that locals are essensial for cultivation of original culture.
This is because they are more frequent of local matters than settlers.
Of course, I always learn about Japanese traditional culture from them.

On the other hand, one of the settlers’ roles is supposed to be finding local characteristics and charm.
Settlers could compare the settlement to the other place.

They might be interested to know Japanese traditional customs, but sometimes it might be difficult to accept.
This is because Japanese traditional customs are sometimes irrational.

It seems to be important to respect their original culture and the way of viewing each other.
So that, the town would continue to flourish with its characteristics.
I would like to support locals as well as settlers to flourish the town for the future.
